Question Wine and SUSE linux 10...errors making me tipsy

I realise Wine is under heavy development, but I thought I would try it out.

I have installed it using YaST, i know it is there because when I
# rpm -q wine

I get this message:
wine-20050725-3.2

Now I want to invoke it to see if it works; so I do this:
# wine /usr/share/wine-c/windows/system/notepad.exe

I get this error message:
wine: cannot find '/usr/share/wine-c/windows/system/notepad.exe'

Could someone please talk me thru this; have I missed something.
My /usr/share/ has a wine folder with these 2 files:
generic.ppd
wine.inf

and nothing else. So I guess it was not installed at all. Should there not be a 'gimic' windows directory created or something. I have tried the documents in WineHQ, but I am new to all these things, and would appreciate your assistance.

Many thanks,
SL

First of all, make sure you've got the latest version. (0.9.6)

It's not really a surprise that wine can't find files that aren't on your system.
When you run wine the first time, it creates a directory ~/.wine where the fake windows disk resides. So try:

$ cd ~/.wine/drive_c/windows
$ wine notepad.exe

Okay, I unstalled the existing version and installed the recent 0.9.6 from wineHQ. Installed with Yast once again. Then I read the README.SUSE that suggested this:

5. Running "wineprefixcreate" will update or create such a wine base
directory.

There usually is no need for additionaly configuring wine.

If no ~/.wine is present, it will setup a fake windows
environment in ~/.wine by itself, including all necessary config
file and registry settings by running "wineprefixcreate".

Start wine:
-----------
Check whether wine runs by entering (e.g.) 'wine sol.exe' or
'wine progman'.

I entered 'wineprefixcreate' and it created windows "fake' directories in ~/.wine. Now here is the thing:

When i tyoe this:
# wine notepad.exe

Gues what, it pops up perfectly well. So I guess it is working. Now how do I get it to read the MS office XP and other programs I have windows XP program file I have on the Windows c drive? Do I have install from CD-ROM into my /.wine directory?

Sorry to be so excited..this is great!!!
Thanks for the attention
SL

Install them with wine. But take a look at OpenOffice.org, Abiword, etc first.

Yes, thanks for the tip. You see I have a Statistical program called SAS and SPSS installed under windows; I would like to access this thru linux and wine. Dou you think, this will work? Or do you suggest I install the programs from CD-ROM into the ~/.wine drive_c program files directory> Will they work? or os this a long shot?

Not sure if it will work:
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=1028

But you can always try. Mount your install-cd in linux. Run the setup program with wine. Then 'cd' to your .wine/installpathtospss and try to run SPSS with wine.

Maybe I'm a bit of an oddball or something, but I've always just opened Windows files (small games and programs, nothing complex like Office or anything) by clicking on them... when it comes up asking which program to open it with, I type in "wine". That has always worked for me with stuff like notepad, card games, whatever. This completely gets around the problem of wine not being able to find whatever it is that I want to run (due to spelling mistakes, whatever).

Then again, I am the type of guy who hates RingTFM.

I just noticed that you wanted to run Office... is this even possible with normal wine? I've used it only with Crossover, under the asssumption that wine won't cut it.

Dave

Tried MS Office XP and 2003 non of them install at all. SPSS does not run, but installs fully. SAS nada!. I managed to access the windows/C drive from
#winefiles (GUI of wine)

But many programs do not run at all. WINWORD.EXE opens but stops saying the prog not installed for this user. What a bummer.

Anyway, I am tired now. Damn, I have to work on this dissrtation..am I in trouble!! ,smile>
