WINE and Codecs for SuSE

Can anybody give me a step by step explanation on how to install WINE and video codec's under SuSE 9.2 Professional. I'm a complete newb at linux, so it'd be helpful if you could provide every step and their reason (because I'd like to learn what to do in the future, instead of having to just simply bother everyone else with these questions :P). Thanks in advance!

installing wine is easy! it's configuring it and getting it to run anything other than the installshield process that's a mission. what programs do want wine to run, if u don't mind me asking?
as for codecs, i'm not entirely sure. if you install xine, there are about three packages and one of then contains the codecs. whether they'll work with other players, i'm not sure.

Well, for WINE, I was thinking of running Ventrilo (as I can't find any Linux version's of this program out there), as well as trying to get it to work with Counter-Strike (the Steam 1.6 version). On a related not to that, I heard that WINE cannont mimic DirectX very well so, is it possible to simply set CS to run under OpenGL and be able to play it flawlessly?
