windows xp not booting (ubuntu 10.04 and windows xp)


I am using ubuntu 10.04 and windows xp sp3 in my laptop. Everything was ok till yesterday. When I choose windows xp the system reboots and come back to selection panel. Ubuntu works ok. Can any body help me?

Right, assuming that you have windows installed on disk one on the first partition, add the following code to the file /boot/grub/grub.conf You may require root privileges. Grub sees the first disk as number 0 and first partition on that disk as 0. So let's say for example windows is on disk 2 partition 5 the where you see (hd0,0) in the code below; you would change it to (hd1,4)

This should under normal cases get you to work with windows again:

You are not supposed to change the grub2 /boot/grub/grub.cfg files. If you make changes read this tutorial, it will explain using the os-prober and update-grub commands.

grub2 tutorial

If you do decide to change the grub.cfg file it would be

menu entry "Windows"{
set root=(0,1)
chainloader+1
}
