Windows XP Not Appearing At Bootup On Mint 17 / Windows XP Dual Boot

I have a HP desktop with One half of the hard drive partitioned for windows XP and the other half of the hd partitioned for and installed with linex mint 17 cinnamon. When I boot the computer I never see the option to choose windows XP or linux mint, I do see a black screen for ten seconds at boot up and then linex mint loads and runs correctly. I can view the drive and see the windows partition with ntsf file present and all linex partitions appear to be present including GRUB in /boot. Any suggestions, I am a newbie, thanks in advance for any help.

Whilst the black screen is displayed, hit the <Shift> key - should give a menu. If so, we can help you make that permanent.

...and if that doesn't work, can you post the content of /etc/default/grub, please.
you can open a terminal window, maximize it (!), then type
Code:
cat /etc/default/grub
then copy all output and paste it here, between code tags (code tags: go advanced, '#').

is the screen all black for ten seconds? nothing at all?

edit /etc/default/grub
change grub-timeout to atleast 5
there may also be an entry for hidden-timeout there.
