hi all, i configured my dns server running on redhat5(test.com, ip-192.168.10.1), all is working perfect on the server its-self and on the client machine(xp), it cant resolve the name( www.test.com or test.com) but can resolve when i use http://192.168.10.1, all tpc/ip settings are ok, nslookup displays the following error
CAN'T FIND SERVER NAME FOR ADDRESS 192.168.10.1: TIMED OUT.
DEFAULT SERVERA ARE NOT AVAILABLE
DEFAULT SERVER:UNKNOWN
ADDRESS 192.168.10.1.
PLEASE NOTE:

the reverse is working fine from the redhat machine,
NO firewall on the client xp machine
xp as host name is added in /etc/hosts

Suspect its a configuration error. Generally 192.168.X.X is a non-routable range for machines that are directly linked to each other - is your client machine directly cabled onto your server?

Have you tried resolving IP's from a Linux client?

Is there a firewall on the linux machine? What addresses is bind listening on?

Oh yes, they are directly connected thru a 5port switch. i want to configure NAT in the future so i have 2 nics on the server. from the other linux client, it resolves ip AND names(srvlin.test.com) i guess using /etc/hosts.conf, as i've not configured bind on it yet. THE MAIN GOAL WAS FOR MY XP CLIENTS BEING ABLE TO RESOLVE IF i use www.test.com.

bind is listening on 192.168.10.1, all is working fine when i use ip address, but when i use say ns.test.com, it doesnt work, even nslookup fails. it says no servers found. the firewall is there but open to this subnet. thnx for yo reply
