Question Windows XP Host with Ubuntu 7.10 Guest - USB device issue

I have installed Ubuntu 7.10 Guest in VirtualBox with Windows XP Pro SP2 host, I am unable to mount my external usb hard drive no matter what I do:

Enable USB Controller
Enter USB Filter
Install Guest Additions

In the device button, I can see the device, but when I try to mount it, it keeps failing and saying it is not available.

I am able to get to that drive but setting it up as a shared folder, but that is only a stop gap.

Reverse the install order. Install Linux, then VB, then Windiz.

Was that feasible?
Did you find another solution?
Do you still need help?

Does it come back with an error, if so what is the error?
