Windows seeing linux
 

what is the best place to find free software so that I can see a linux server from a windows server/workstation. I'm have trouble copying over files from linux to windows from the linux box. I keep getting a few files here and there that for some reason I do not have access to. I am running windows services for unix on the windows box, and the linux box has no problem seeing it, but just wont do a plain ol' copy and paste over to the windows.

mount your windows drive in linux and then you can read/write to the windows partition, as long as the windows partition has a fat filesystem, if it is a ntfs filesystem on the windows drive then you can't write to it...

If you have both windows and linux on the same computer you can access the linux partitions from windows with the nice program explore2fs. Just google for it! :)

now you say that I cannot copy files to NTFS, but I have already copied over 40 gig of files to that partition which is ntfs, could the reason that I'm getting errors on some files be that it is ntfs and not FAT?

:scratch: How do you copy the files? And what windows do you use?

I copy the files by mounting a drive on the linux box that points to the directory on the windows box. windows services for Unix allows me to do this. Once there, I just either drag and drop, or right click and copy to target mounted folder.

P.S. Samba, is that installed on linux or windows? if on linux, is there any software for windows that will allow me to see the linux?

Ah, I'm sorry, I'm at a loss here, but I don't know if I feel comfortable ;) Anyway, I repeat: explore2fs works fine, and that also allows drag and drop, the only thing is that you have to do it from windows. I solved this problem (I 'm running both XP and linux) by having a FAT32 partition where I put things that I want accessible from both sides.

Does this work across a network? or only if you have a dual boot system?

Only over a dual boot system, I'm afraid. Otherwise I have to agree with the former posts: samba. I have never used it, so I can't help you with that - sorry =]

explore2fs only works on a dualboot system.

If you want to do it over the network, use samba. Samba installs on a Linux/Unix box and allows you to share files on a Linux server with Windows PC's. You can also mount WIndows shares on a Linux PC too.

Here's the problem with samba, it is already installed on the machine, but ever since linuxconf stopped working, samba stopped working, is there a way to administer samba through a different gui, or command line?

Try webmin for a web based config.
