Windows, Mepis Linux on separate drives

I have a Compaq Presario 5000 with two 40 gig drives with Windows XP on the master boot drive and Mepis llinux on the slave. When Mepis was installed I couldn't install LILO to either the MBR or the root. I need to keep the Windows drive as the boot drive for the time being. How can I start Mepis on the second drive after the machine is turned on? A boot diskette is ignored.

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Normally you can select in the bios which boot device is used first.

You should select first:flop second CD third HD

If you put a flop or a cd in the bios will boot from flop or cd first and if they
are not there it will use the HD.

Thanks, CloudBuilder. (Great name, incidentally.) The problem turned out to be mostly between my ears. I have Windows on hda (the master drive) and installed Mepis linux on hdb and tried to put LiLo on hdb when, of course, it belongs on the MBR on hda. So I reinstalled and put LiLo on the MBR in hda and everything works fine. Some days are like that.
