Windows Manger vs "Desktop"

Hi,

I would like to use an old laptop to dial into the internet and check my web based email. Also, I would like to do simple web surfing (no Flash or other plug ins needed).

Which browser would you recommend and then which distro would support it? As for the subject of this post... can I get away with using a simple Windows manger or do I have to go to a full blown desktop to use a web browser?

Thanks.

Nope, you don't need a full-bloated DM to browse :)

The smallest WM's will let you run Opera, for instance,
as long as the right Qt libraries are installed.

Cheers,
Tink

I have an old IBM Thinkpad 600e, and have had good luck with Mozilla (mozilla.org), running in SuSE Linux 8.1. Mozilla incorporates browser, e-mail and news clients in one package. I've used it with both Windowmaker, which is fairly simple and lightweight, and KDE, which is neither. :) It has worked fine with both, and runs well on both my laptop (P2/366, 288 MB RAM) and my old desktop (K6/233 MMX, 64 MB RAM). It runs alot slower on the desktop, of course, but is still quite acceptable.

The browser alone is available from mozilla.org as Firefox, and the e-mail/news client as Thunderbird, I believe, athough if you need all three, you might be better off just getting Mozilla.

Use a light windowmanager like fluxbox or windowmaker and install Opera. You can use it as a browser or an email client and if you want to read a web page in full screen, it actually full screens - no toolbars. Its only about 5 megs, including the static qt libs. Lock and load.

Not trying to diss the Mozilla project, but its way to resource-hungry for an old computer, and it takes a boatload of drive space. Better if you use on a more capable computer.
