Windows Internet Gateway on LAN

I am using my PC on a LAN network in my house; the LAN is comprised of two computers, my computer upstairs, and the 'server' computer downstairs (connected via network cards etc). The downstairs PC has the cable internet connection, and is running Windows XP. I have a dual boot system on the Upstairs PC, with both Windows XP and Mandrake 9.01, and I use the internet gateway option (on XP) to access the internet from upstairs. However, I'm having trouble configuring Linux to recognise the same internet gateway ... is this a Windows/Linux conflict? And is there a way around this?

Thanks in anticipation,

Turin

You will need to find the TCP address of your cable modem.

Then:

in explorer on the win machine type

http://xxx.yyy.zzz.ooo

to talk to your cable modem... xxx.yyy.zzz.ooo is the address of your cable modem.

This should give you the menu to control your modem. Part of the info you can discover includes the DNS server address (also nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn)

Use the netconfig command on the linux box to set the gateway address to the address of your cable modem. Also add the DNS server address you saw on the windows box talking to the modem.

ALTERNATELY... use netconfig on the linux box to select DHCP and then OK until you get the command prompt again (and restart your machine, booting linux..)
