Windows gone fubar ater MD Harddrive crashed

Heres the setup/status:

XP Pro Installed on HDA1 - 40gig
Mandrake 8.1 Installed on HDA2 - 5 gig (old)

Twiddling around, trying to install a few packages that wernt installed.
Problems arose, thx old hardware, anyways rebooted 1st w/o unmounting. 2nd time unmounted.

After trying to boot the second time BIOS couldnt autodected the Mandrake harddrive, which with the noise i heard the HD making it makes sense. The Harddrive is gone...

Toss the Harddrive and attempt to bootup into XP, Fubar.

All it does now is display 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 untill i reboot.
This is a new one to me, but im guessing it has something to do with the MBR and that the the boot loader is missing.

Anyone help me out with a resolution that doesnt include junking windows?...just yet...

1. Havent tried Fixmbr using the windows cd (still looking)
2. Havent used linux cd to try either (scared to atm)
3.....?

Thx,
Ex~

Pretty much the only way is to use a Windows CD and use the fixmbr command. There is also a site where you can download Win98 Boot Disks, you might be able to do it with those.

Basically - You're right. Your MBR is fubarred.
XP Pro - insert XP Disk, go to rescue console
issue these commands

fixboot
fixmbr

should resolve the issue
