Windows Compatible Linux
 

Hey there,

Are there any free distros that will allow you to run windows applications on them? My mom has an old POS system running windows 98. She doesn't have the money to get a new one so I was thinking about getting her linux. The problem is that she uses only a couple of programs for work purposes, and they require windows. She does not have the hard drive space to dual boot. I've heard a little about Voodoo being windows compatible. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You can use wine - www.winehq.com it has a compatibility list and google will have info on others trying to get <insert program name here> to work.

Out of curiosity what are the apps she needs? things like MS office can be replaced by open office pretty much.

All distros can run some Windows programs via wine, but it's a pain to set up. None of them natively support Windows programs. Which programs does she need? Office type stuff? To be honest, you'd be better off sticking with Windows. An older computer is not going to be able to handle OpenOffice, and she may not be willing to learn another program (though you can always try to persuade her!).
