Windows ate Linux!
:Pengy: I recently recieved Icewind Dale 2 as a gift. So I decided to play it, I opened up WINE only to be dissapointed. To make long story short, I installed XP on one of my unactive partition on my hard drive. Well my Linux boot loader is gone, and I cannot figure out how to get back in. I would use a boot disk but I do not have a floppy drive. So there is the issue at hand. I recently upgraded from 7.3 to 8.0 in hopes that it would reinstall LILO but... alais it said at the end of the installation "No RPMS have been installed boot loader will remain the same"...

Try to boot of your CD (RH does have
a rescue-mode?) without re-installing... All you actually need to do is tell the kernel to use your actual RH-partition /dev/hda? as / ... you can then simply run lilo and voila... Cheers, Tink |
Use CD1 to get into rescue mode then try this:

It does that. Install Linux again and you should be set for life (or until Windows shatters:mad: ).

FWIW for games you want to look at WineX, not WineHQ wine.
WineX is a commercial fork of the wine project. Long story, but it has better games support, WineHQ is better for apps. |
...what about a WINe that runs it all? I intend to game AND run apps.
|
The two can be installed together, they are forks of the same project, so WineHQ can run some games, and WineX can run some apps, but you have more success when you match each one to the right type of program.
Hopefully WineHQ will someday have good games support, but we lost a lot of time thanks to TransGaming <sigh> |
Thanks Mhearn! That is really helpful to me. Now I know to download 'em both. Also, what is the diference between OpenGL WINe and unstripped WINe? Is OpenGL just the OpenGL plugin for regular WINe? I didn't realize they could be run together either. Where does WineX come from? What site?
|
unstripped wine? not sure what you're talking about there.
WineX: see transgaming.com |
Unstripped Wine can be found under WineHQ. There's an Unstripped version and a OpenGL version there. Also, Isn't WINe a GPL written program? YOU ARE IN VIOLATION OF THE GNU PROTECTION LICENSE!:D
|
No, WineHQ is LGPL.
