windows 98 cannot connect to ubuntu samba shared file

Hi everybody please help me with this problem.
I have Ubuntu Server 9.10 and Windows 98 client. I already installed samba in ubuntu so that windows 98 can access shared files from ubuntu. When I ping both their ip address there is a reply. Ubuntu Server can see shared files from Windows 98 but Windows 98 cannot see Ubuntu Server through Network Neighborhood and their is an error " Unable to connect the network". What are the possible things to solve this problem?

Take note:Both ip address can ping.

Advance Thank you to all if you can help me.

There are many things that have to be right before you can connect. Here is a link so you can start learning how to configure samba, and your win98 systems.

http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/using_samba/toc.html

Look first through ch3, there is information on w98 config. Check that out first.

You also need to configure /etc/samab/smb.conf. Have you done this? If not, that is necessary. You also need to add smbusers to the samba system. Have you done that?

Thank you so much, I appreciate your reply camorri. Actually, everything you said is already configured and also added smbusers. Windows XP don't have any problem accessing Ubuntu Server only Windows 98 gives shaky head. Basically, when you go through Network Neighborhood you can see WORKGROUP or DOMAIN NAME before you access the shared file on the server, right? but nothing to happened the error appears. What will I do?

On Windows 95/98/Me, the HOSTS file goes in the Windows installation directory, which is usually C:\Windows. Note that a file called hosts.sam is already there, which is a sample HOSTS file provided by Microsoft.
Have you updated the HOSTS file on your Win 98 system? The above quote is from the Samba guide. Just a thought.

Beyond that, I can only recommend you go through Ch3 section for W98 and check the way you have W98 configured.

boimmnrg - I detest and despise and abhor necroposting. If you want assistance with connecting a Windows 98 machine to Samba, I can help. Please create a new post.
