win98 install with linux
Hi, I have a problem installing Win98 on a sistem that already has linux on it. I tried to install win on a primary fat16 partition using a startup floppy. After reboot grub didn't started(it is installed in the superblock of the linux partition) and the error message reported 'invalid sistem disk, pls insert disk etc'. After this I couldn't start Linux either, I used live cd, changed the boot flag to the linux partition(initially the windows had the boot flag and grub was working fine). Now, the question: can someoane help me install that damn win 98, what am I doing wrong?
Thanx :). |
Install windows first then linux....
win98 ?? Rob |
I could try this but I don't wanna lose all my installation packages. It's an old system, that's why I chose win 98 :).

YA, I guess it's the only thing I can do :)
Thanx :). |
You do not have to reinstall linux. Windows does not have to be installed first but the boot loader will be over written when a version of windows is installed second.
Linux does not use the boot flag so set it to the windows primary partition. You can restore grub from a liveCD or the original install CD if it has a rescue mode or a rescue boot floppy. You can also save the MBR to a file using the dd command. After windows is loaded restore grub. What distribution / version of linux are you running? |
I use Puppy Linux 2.11. I reinstalled grub after the first win98 setup reboot but still it didn't boot from the harddisk.

Does windows boot successfully or do you still get an invalid system disk message.
The message means that the bootloader is bad or it does not exist. |
I get the error message. I guess the windows install writes the mbr, but still, it should boot correctly at least the from the windows partition if not grub.
