Hi Gaya_3k,
Like jdkaye said, its not the mere presence of the OS that will slow a machine down. There a lot of things to consider when determining the cause, i.e. What and how many programs you have installed & are running how you are utilising your hard drive space, and what sort of RAM you have installed. (Always be catious of viruses too.)HOwever, in saying that I have heard some complaints that it can take up a bunch of resources due to the amount of graphics and gif files etc involved in making it look pretty; but I havent used vista myself so I wouldnt be sure. If you want to share more information we might be able to help more. Secondly, Have a look at linuxquestions.org own Linux Distro section for a bunch of free Linux Operating systems. I work in a redhat enterprise environment and I have Fedora10 running at home. Both very reliable OS's. I like fedora because it has the background and support of redhat, but some people prefer more of a 'people's choice' linux, like ubuntu. http://iso.linuxquestions.org/ Also, here are some useful sites/blogs to get an idea of what the different distro's are like. Hope they help. http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/select...tribution.html http://www.desktoplinux.com/articles/AT3269115798.html Good Luck, Donanap |

Most of distributions would fare better than Vista irrespective of what you use. I had Ubuntu in uncles laptop and it was far better in performance than Vista even with desktop effects working. Ubuntu is free and they mention it will always be. You can download it from the site or if you do not have enough internet bandwidth you can even ask them to ship the cd and they will happily do it for you and will not charge a penny. Goto shipit.ubuntu.com. |
thanks yar for ur replies...
my laptop specs are.. 120gb hard disk, 512mb RAM, celeron processor. hp-compaq laptop. i have gone through the sites u all posted..very useful .. thanks again.... |
Not a bad spec laptop. I have a similar laptop at home (not mine, my fathers) just that it has 40 gigs of hdd of make IBM. And Ubuntu does well on that. You might want to keep Compiz 3D effects turned off.

Hi gaya3_k,
I'm not trying to discredit linuxlover or make you feel bad, however whilst you have an OK hard drive size for a laptop, your pc specs are not that great and could be why your system is slowing down whilst trying to run Vista. Below is the minimum system requirements for running Vista Home. Quote:
Anyhow, you will find that as far as a linux machine goes.. you should have NO problems. Linux wont require these sort of specs! Good luck once again, glad the websites were useful! |
