Will someone please tell me if im right
Will someone please tell me if this would be right for a windows xp pro dual red hat laptop. I am kinda confused on the partitioning and booting issues. I have winxp pro already installed on a 40 gig hd. It is on a toshiba satellite pro 6100.
Here is the hard drive as it is: Volume (C:) Volume size = 37.26 GB Cluster size = 4 KB Used space = 6.21 GB Free space = 31.05 GB Percent free space = 83 % Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation Total MFT size = 59 MB MFT record count = 31,711 Percent MFT in use = 52 % Total MFT fragments = 3 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fragments File Size Files that cannot be defragmented None *******Here I ran partition magic to spilt and repartition the drive. I havent done anything but, this is what I propose to do if this is right: *******(1 C NTFS 21,548.1 15,185.6 Active Primary) (1 * Extended 16,606.3 16,606.3 0.0 None Primary) (1 *swapspace2 Linux Swap 2,,039.5 0.0 2,047.3 None Logical) (1 *Redhat Linux Ext2 16,566.7 562.0 14,000.8 None Logical)******* *******Is this ok? Help is here...hope so :)
Hi there..
Are u planning to install.. a workstation / custom system..?? at a max the RH8 linux installation will take roguhly 5 GB if everything is installed I would suggest the following space allocations for ur linux installation 100 MB for /boot 1.5-2 GB for /home 6 GB for / ~900 mb for /tmp double the amt of RAM as swap space 512 mb in ur case we allcate 2 g for /home to save out personal data, so that in the future if u need to install a newer version from scratch all ur persoanl data can be saved. create all these as ext2 partitions except swap partiton u can create all these partitions using P-magic from win., including the swap and go on to install linux .. BUT WAIT !!! most probably u r bound to end up in trouble if u r having ntfs as the filesystem ..grub / lilo can give problems..at least from my experience.... so plz consult the grub documentation properly. I too use win xp but the file system is FAT 32... so i dont have problems.( i too had NTFS but lilo gave probs ..so i reformatted the hdd as fat 32)..at the least create a boot up disk for windows & linux as well...and go ahead to install if the filesystem was fat 32, u could use a win 9x boot up floppy to restore the MBR, by typing fdisk /mbr ( if something went wrong) but ntfs will not allow it.. so be very careful.. espaecially if u have important data on the system.. if u have a backup of the data u will need to convert the fs to fat 32 so that problems can be avoided... u will lose all the data in the process if so I would suggest the following space allocations 3.5 - 4 Gb for windows ( dont install anything else, only windows ) 4 - 6 g for program files ( all extra things that u install shud go in here ) .... ur size choice for partitons..... 8 GB for linux ..this shud be preferably the last partition(s)..(total of all /, boot ..etc..) so thats it..hope this helps..once more ,consult the GRUB /lilo stuff with someone else.. i am not 100 % sure.. :) |
