Unhappy Will someone guide me through installing new software on SUSE 10?

Hi, i have recently bought a HP Mininote 2133 with Linux SUSE 10 KDE preloaded on. It doesn't have a CD drive and i am wondering how to install new software.

I especially need firefox because it started not to open when i clicked on the icon. I dowloaded the source folder on another computer and then put it on my mininote using an external hard drive.

I just want to know exactly how to install and be able to access any software.

I also found a file inside the folder named: INSTALL, when i double click on this it comes up with an option to 'run' but when i press this, nothing happens(or i cant see anything happening)

PLEASE HELP ASAP

thanks so much

Just open YaST and find the part where it lets you manage packages.

Get rid of the Firefox tarball you downloaded, Firefox should already be in the openSuSE repositories.

I can't give you a step-by-step because I don't currently use neither openSuSE nor YaST. So for that you'll need to go to the online documentation (which I provided you a link for), or wait for an LQ member who can walk you through things step-by-step. I suggest you read the YaST documentation, try doing whatever it is that you are trying to do, and then come back with any more specific questions you might have. Like I said, you basically just need to find the option in YaST which takes you to the package manager. There you'll be able to select which packages (such as Firefox) you wish to install/remove/upgrade/re-install/etc.

I updated suse and the other day after a reboot gnome stopped working. Fortunately I didn't really need a GUI and YaST works at the command line quite well.
