hplip supports hp printers - however, CUPS et al supports many brands.
Canon brands are usually iffy, particularly pixma, however, since it is listed as supported you should be fine. I see the PIXMA iP4500 2171B002
is listed as working perfectly
using the canonip4300.ppd driver, though it is not listed in foomatic... This means you will be installing a driver.
There is a ppd reccomended and some people have made rpms, which you can apply through alien.
So - don't worry about hplip.
