WiFi works on live USB, wont connect when installed

As in title

Linux mint Rebecca cinnamon 64bit. 2 different WiFi adapters both work on old pc setup . WiFi connects no problem when running from USB. Install to SSD and network shows up but just keeps trying to connect. Tried other versions of mint and lubuntu (same distro as old pc). Will try install to my other HDD later on and try 32bit versions but its a new setup so cant see that helping

Any suggestions please?
Thanks

mikeb1986,

I hope that I have understood you correctly.

Could you let us have some more info please with each wifi adapter inserted separately.

Open Terminal and then type each one of these commands. Press the Enter key after each command. The last one needs your password.

Code:

lspci
lsusb
ifconfig
iwconfig
rfkill list all
sudo lshw -C network

Then copy and paste the output(s) in your reply.

Click on “Go Advanced” and put the output in code tags (see # at top of post).

Thanks.

mikeb1986 02-20-2015 11:24 AM

beachboy thank you for reply

I booted up on the live USB again this afternoon and no luck on the pre-installed version now (mint again, loading lubuntu onto USB now).
On HDD boot one wifi adapter shows only my wifi (talktalk), but the other adapter shows only the other networks in range. But on USB boot both adapters pickup all networks, would connect to talktalk this morning, but no luck now

copied what you asked for, quite a lot of writing but here goes sure you know what to look for better than me

Belkin adapter (old one, doesnt show my netowrk up, but what I;ve used for years on other pc's runing 32bit versions of linux)

thanks again

beachboy2 02-21-2015 02:50 AM

Thanks for the 2 outputs.

Try using a 32 bit version of Mint or Xubuntu/Lubuntu to see if that makes any difference.

Enabling IOMMU (if applicable) in the BIOS for 64 bit may help.

mikeb1986 02-21-2015 06:53 AM

No luck with 32bit either.
I found a thread on ubuntu forums regarding the mobo having problems with networking on 64 bit linux systems. Fix involved changing a line in grub to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="iommu=soft"
And disabling iommu on motherboard settings.

It seemed to work but I rebooted and had same trouble again.

I still have one wireless adapter showing only my network, and one showing 3 others. 2 of them are btWiFi that I can connect to on the pc, but not use (not a customer). Same problem in 64 and 32 bit versions. Wondering if its some settings on the router but tried resetting the router and didn't affect it

beachboy2 02-21-2015 08:06 AM

What is the make, model and version number of your motherboard?

I take it that you did the following to the 64 bit installation?

Step #1: In terminal type:

Code:

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
Step #2: Edit this line to read:

Code:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="iommu=soft"
Step #3: Save and close Gedit

Step #4: In terminal type:

Code:

sudo update-grub
Step #5: In bios disable iommu.

If it is possible, can you let us have the various outputs for the Belkin and Realtek adapters using the 32 bit OS?

mikeb1986 02-21-2015 08:32 AM

yes that's what I did. Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P

I am now online on the new PC (on Mint 17.1 32bit) using the realtek adapter. I havent changed or done anything just plugged it back in to get these outputs. But as I said I had it working earlier and when I restarted it wouldnt connect. Also its still not showing up any of the other networks that I know are in range
