wifi won't work ubuntu 10.10 broadcom 4311

i'm having a lot of trouble getting my wifi to work on my dell inspiron e1405 laptop.

I looked through the forums and tried a few solutions to no avail. I have included some relevant info about my setup below. I'm a newbie. I was thinking of posting in networking but I thought I'd try here first. Let me know if there is any other info I can get you. I really want this to work. Thanks in advance.

There seems to be wireless card that has been detected just not connected to the network.
Look here for the similar issue.
try out the commands suggested to connected to wireless connection manually and see if you get to internet.

I went to that thread and did what it requested and it didn't work. I started by disabling the encryption on my router. I figure I'll try without and then deal with that hurdle afterward.

i type sudo iwconfig eth1 essid <my ssid> then type my admin pw, then it took me to a new command prompt without saying anything. I then downloaded dhcpcd with apt-get and used the command dhcpcd -d eth1. I will include the results in the next post. The icon on the menu bar still has the Wireless Networks greyed out and says "wireless is disabled" I'm still unable to get onto the internet.

Have a read of this. I haven't bothered trying Maverick yet, but worked for me on a netbook on Lucid

If the network is shown as disabled, then right click on the icon and enable it.

I tried the instructions in the post 2 above me and always get hung up on this command:

sudo modprobe -r b43 ssb

I always get the following error message:

FATAL: Module ssb is in use.

Any ideas?

That's only needed if you don't reboot.

I've rebooted after every change I've made. Somehow now it doesn't show up in the connections list anymore. Not even as disabled.
