I have spent days just trying to get a linux dist to recognize my wifi card, and now finally I have Kanotix to the point where the KWiFiManager shows me connected to an open network in my neighborhood wit a decent signal strength. However, when I open firefox or irc Chat or any other browser I cannot connect to the internet. Any Ideas?

Can you ping the router device ? Because that sort of sounds a little "firewall-ish" too me.
You can be connected to the access point, but still not have internet access. Check in KWifiManager to see if it is showing a valid IP address for your computer.
You can also check with iwconfig from a root console.
You might want to try finding another wireless router to connect to just to see what happens.
if there are any other computers on you network just check and see if they can get online, almost ever one here has given advice that shuld help you but if your still haveing problems then i would restore my router to defult, install new Firmware and try again. you also might be haveing an ip conflict with other computers on your networks so run them all off and try the commands ( 1. su 2. dhcpcd ath0 or wlan0 or dhclient ath0 or wlan0 ) good luck!
