Widescreen WXGA Laptop + VGA-Out (same time)

I am trying to set up my xorg.conf file to work for both VGA-Out and the internal LCD at the same time (Powerpoint/Impress presentations to projector). I seem to running into difficulty that if the VGA port is plugged in, the internal LCD display wil not show anything! The internal resolution on the LCD is 1280x800 and the output to the VGA port *needs* to be 800x600 (or equivalent). I have tried all the NVidia options l;ike TwinView, but nothing seems to be working by having them both display at the same time! Even so, it seems this is not even possible in Windows. To get the VGA/LCD to both work at the same time well, I need to set the internal LCD to the lowest resolution so that the VGA output doesn't extend into nothingness on the projector! I was able to do with the NVidia NView point-an-click GUI utility that lets you change these settings on the fly, then hit FN + F4 to rotate between LCD only, VGA only, or both concurrently. In Linux there seems to be no easy utility for this like NView, and I'm stuck grudging through Xorg settings that don't work...any ideas???
