Wi-fi printing configuration (HP)

Hi,
This is my first visit to LinuxQuestions so Happy Thursday to you all!
When I installed Linux Mint 17 I had my HP printer attached by the USB cable. I am hoping to find out how to set it up through the Wi-Fi. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would be most grateful.

Matt

ps My friend told me he recently upgraded his Windows 8.1 and the routine took away his admin rights and dumped him into a restricted user. MS want $99 to fix it. The tears have dried now but my stomach still aches like crazy.

Welcome to Linux Questions!

You'll need to tell us which HP printer you're using (probably)

I'm running Linux Mint 17 with an HP Photosmart something-0r-other. I powered up the printer till the WiFi blue led came on to say it was connected to my lan then I just added a network printer via the printer application on Mint, it picked it up straight away, set as default and Rober et votre Oncle!

You should probably have the hplip driver installed by default in Mint. (I can't remember adding it but it will be available in the repositories if it's not.) Your printer should be supported, check here.

Let us know how you get on.

Play Bonny!

Hi Soadyhead,
Thank you for your reply. I have a HP OfficeJet 6500 e709n and this appears on the link you sent me.
In the driver setup I can see options but I don't have enough Linux experience to know what 'cups' and all the other settings are let alone what they do. I'm presuming its not a driver issue anyway as the printer setup went very smoothly via USB. I assume it is a question of how to get the Wi-Fi on my laptop to scan/find the Wi-Fi on my HP printer but I am out of my depth. I got directed to this site when searching for 'wifi printing' and the link promised an article on network printing but I had to sign-up first. I have tried search for it but it came back with 'no matches'.

Thank you. Matt.

I was assuming (First mistake?) that your laptop is connected to a wireless router and the printer is also connected to the same wireless router. I'm not sure how you connect them together in an ad hoc network.

Via the router I didn't have to do anything with cups or any configuring, as I said, it was just picked up as a network printer when I searched with the printer set up app.
Thinking back. I may have been asked to pick a driver somewhere during the printer selection, I just picked hplip and it worked.

Play Bonny!
