Why won't my PC shut down?
I'm running Fedora 8 on a self-built PC. Everything has worked fine for about a month, until I did a large update, and now it won't shut down. All of the services shut down properly, and the system halts. Then it just sits there. I really don't want to be forced to keep going back to the den to shut down my computer. How do I fix this?

If you compile your own kernel, there is an option that you can build into the kernel, or create a module, that deals specifically with laptop or desktop support. I believe that this is under the ACPI section. As far as utilities are concerned, I cannot recommend any for you since I don't know readily offhand. I believe that there are some built-in with various window managers, like KDE and Gnome. These may be dependent on how you have your kernel configured, though. got to load the acapi module inorder to make it work. |
What happens when you issue the command "poweroff"?

Until the update, the system always shut down by using the shutdown commands from the GUI. I'll dig into the grub, and check the acpi. I haven't tried the "poweroff" command yet. One of my problems with this is that I make my kids use it to surf the net. The Windoze machine isn't allowed access to the internet, which they use for gaming. After I get more familiar with GNU/Linux, I'll probably try out Cedega or something, so I can take MS off all of my machines. Thanks for the reply.

OK, I'll admit it - I caused it myself. I had ACPI disabled in the BIOS. Something in my system won't wake up from stand-by, and instead of disabling stand-by mode, I shut off ACPI. Enabled it, and all is well. Now I'm sorting out some updater problems on FedoraForum, and I think I'll have this thing licked. Where do I post a web browser question?

New thread, either in "Server" or here. I'd consider "here" ;)
