test it when you can.
you will see; you will stay with it.
before you test it, ask here again which linux variant (depending of your hardware and for which use).
Or ask a friend to install it and show it to you. You will stay with it. 99,9% chance (the 0,1% missing for achieving 100%, the reason why you would not stay is because your friend was not installing it properly or you want to show off with your windoze 8 or your apple pc).

I use linux because it does everything I need from basic tasks to advance tasks. My favorite aspect of linux is shell scripting. You take commands and write shell script around them to make custom programs to do what you want. Linux kicks ASS!!!

Why do i use Gnu/Linux? Because i'm able to use it the way i want to, and not the way a company wants me to use it. (Although, Redhat may be changing that with the influence they're having; pushing systemd ect)
Why not a different Free Operating system then, one may ask, such as FreeBSD? Well to be honest, i rely on mobile broadband, and i am unable to connect to the internet without network manager. I've tried wvdial, but couldn't connect, granted i haven't spent a lot of time trying with wvdial though. Network manager isn't available on other Free operating systems, so that makes it hard for me to use anything other than Windows, Os X and Gnu/Linux.

Faster, safer, reliable, free, not monolithic, and probably another million of reasons one can think of. I can't think of an advantage of Windows (any version, the more recent the worse). As a programmer myself, I had once to develop a program on Windows, and I ended up using tools mimicking GNU/Linux behavior on an environment that everything is obviously NOT made for serious work.
As for gaming, which a friend here mentioned as an advantage of Windows, more and more developers realize the need to make their games Linux-compatible. And, in any case, if a game won't play on Linux, it isn't worth playing. ;)

I don't know why you, doqi28, should use Linux. But I use it mainly because I find it a lot more interesting than Windows.

Here's a point about linux that I love that I don't hear people mention much.
Once you know it you never really have to learn it again.

For example:
I've been using windows since 92. I started with win 3.1.
I started using Redhat linux in 94.
In succession of windows, they make such an effort to change all the things that don't work that they don't stop to consider that some people don't want to change. Imagine if you stopped using your windows machine in 95 and started using it now. you would be completely lost.

I've changed distro's many times, but as far as the user environment on my linux box, what has changed?
Nothing, unless I wanted it too.
I still have the same goto commands and functuonality that I had nearly 20 years ago. Sure technology has improved. but every single improvement is optional.

It bothers me that Microsoft seems to believe that advances in hardware serve no purpose other than to support their bloated us. So every new generation of hardware comes with a new more uselessly bloated windows.

My Gentoo system is fast functional, runs linux as well as windows apps in wine quite well; Looks great despite that it is very minimal; and uses a fraction of the memory.

I also have a question, that is what distro of linux do you suggest for programming? I use Ubuntu, but I also want to use other distributions like Debian, RedHat etc.

I now use Linux because it's extremely fun and I've always wanted to do more in depth work with computers; always talked about going into schooling for computer programming and web design but in reality I'm not making an effort to learn anything. Linux is best at these things, and it's a culture shock to use in the first place compared to babysitting Windows.

I'm hardly Linux savy, but when I picked my distro I was looking to stay away from specifically Ubuntu. I was pointed towards Debian when I asked for a stable distro to learn on and that's the direction I took. I don't know if it's exactly the best for programming, but it's what I was suggested, with programming on it as a factor in mind.
