Why my ubuntu system not turning off?

When i am trying to shut down the system, system remains on. screen become black or blank but CPU light is on, fan is working. For trying purpose i wait for more than 1 hour but it will not shut down.

Same thing happen when i am trying to reboot the working system. It will not turn off. CPU fan and CPU light remains on.

Please help me in this matter.

My Ubuntu version is ubuntu 12.04.5
Release is 12.04

I tried (sudo shutdown -h now). After doing it screen will be black but CPU fan is steel running, SMPS is also in working condition. PC Light is also on. It is not actually shutting down. Problem remain as it is.

When i will press start button for long time then it will be shutting down.

You may not be in the group that can manage power..

google around a bit and see if there is a power group if there is:

useradd -G {group-name} username

Has shutdown or reboot ever worked?
Is this a new install?
Are you an unprivileged user?
Have you tried either
Quote:
sudo shutdown -h now
or
Quote:
sudo reboot

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.

In addition, what is the make/model of your computer? What version of Ubuntu are you running? At first thought it looks like an acpi issue.
