why Linux is limited
well.my main purpose was to,being a newbie(intentions were nt to hurt any1s feelings abt linux, sorry 4 tht as i did it unintentionally realzing after reading few harsh comments), know the diff and comparing btw linux and windows, ios.
n hav found a lot of info and was very useful, even though i m still a newbie. n yes linux is nt limited, its user fault. n i m using ubuntu. why linux has so much limitations? i mean look at windows n iOS, with 1 simple click of the mouse or press of 1 button, n it gives so much options. But in linux, why not GUI is that much versatile and powerful. I am a newbie and facing so much problems and technical difficulties(even though its good for learning), where as in windows every thing is easy to learn and user dont have to go through so much challenges. |
I am not quite sure what distribution you are referring. You can try both Fedora and Ubuntu for nice GUI based linux.
Easy or versatile is really depends on how many years you are using that OS. For example, when you start use Windows 8, you have learning curve although we are using Windows 7 for years. But you will be very comfortable with Andriod(Linux) after you familiar with it for years. Best part of linux is since opensource, it has strong community which will support you. Good luck with your linux journey. |
Welcome to LQ!
GNU/Linux is not Windows Since you are new to it, of course you don't know, but GNU/Linux does have much more to offer, you just haven't find it yet. More flexibility, it is modular, you can built a very custom and personalized system and or desktop, here a good example about what it can do, watch this video! Cheers |

man wodim Windows and Mac are VERY limited compared to GNU/Linux and UNIX in general. Especially if you take into account that you can modify 99.9% of software in Linux (their source code is open) and thus possibilities with this OS and its software are, well, infinite. And now take a look at Windows 8.1. How much can you modify with it? I'm frightened to even think about it... |
Linux is "open source" software. It is exactly as "limited" or "unlimited" as the user. It has no limitations other than those you bring to the table.
|
I have difficulty understanding what you are talking about. Can you give one concrete example with as much detail as possible of what you were trying to do. Be very clear about the point(s) where you found Linux "limited". As has been pointed out above this may be only a case of your lack of experience with Linux. On the very rare occasions where I am forced to use Windows I find it extremely difficult to do anything at all but that's surely my lack of experience.

Hi malikasad
Linux actually doesnt have limits. At least I can do everything I need to do so for me it is fine. My suggestion for you would be that if you have something specific you need to do and you dont know how to accomplish that you can open up a thread here an ask how it is done. Perhaps other people out there would also benefit with your question. |

For me, I haven't used windows in MANY years...so doing even the simplest things takes me forever, is VERY counter-intuitive, and harder. Because that is MY lack of knowledge in Windows showing...NOT Windows itself. |
Linux is just different. It is not windows, it does not work like windows...

You seem to be expecting Linux to be like windows and it's not. Check the link posted above. For someone who has not used a computer, Linux is at least as easy to learn as windows. |
It is very short sighted (not to say limited) to start a using a new OS and then complain that you don't know your way around.
I have skipped the WinXP and Vista versions, and started using Windows again on W7. What a complicated mess. Can't find a thing, not even my downloaded files. Something weird in the Explorer, "My Documents", "My Libraries", "My Pictures", why can't I find my home directory and find back the files I downloaded or scanned. And this is purely the user level. System settings and adjustments are even worse. Tens of dialog windows to muddle trough, myriads of buttons, but not an overview of anything. And then those stupid pop-ups: "Windows detected that...". I don't want to talk about W8. All logic has gone away there. Got my point? jlinkels |

Please read about the huge take over in Hollywood. Most of all the complex video and multimedia is done on linux as for games only written for windoze oh well be the same as games written just for linux. |
I keep wondering, why do people actually respond to this type of threads? :))
I mean, the OP didn't took his time to browse some docs or reviews or to search for a distro like Mint (for example) or Ubuntu.. But instead searched a linux forum and opened a thread that can cause flames.. I wonder, what his interest is!? hhmmmm.. Just let him be, someone can and should actually be allowed to be wrong on the internet... Or maybe that's just me.. |
mind you there is a learning curve ( JUST LIKE with windows)
but -- and this is an opinion -- If you are using Gnome 3 desktop, it is useless garbage and it unusable . gnome2 was much better or xfce or lxde or even KDE4 is better then Gnome 3 ( but that is MY opinion ) |
Gnome3 that strangely seems a convincing argument. I second the previous post.
