Why is there no sound from the CD-Player

I have finally got the sound to work on my Linux rh 9, but now there is still no sound when I try to listen to any CD. What could be the problem? I have read some of the forum similar problems and they all adrive to get the MPlayer, so I did, but I can't get the GUI side to work at all and even within the termal the mplayer will not play anything. What do I do? Is there just a simple sullotion to this? Can I somehow configure the exitsting Cd players? Give me some suggestions please?

Can you hear musisc when you conect your headphones/speakers to the cd drive directly? Are you sure the sound card is connected (via special cable) with the cdrom drive?

well I am not sure how the soundcard is connected, but I know that the sound is working when I am in windows OS and its working every where in linux exept on the cd player. How would I check how the sound card is connected to the CD Rom and I do not have the option to plug headphones directly into the CD Rom.

i think u didn't conect the "cd sound cable" to your sound card. which is a special cable conect between CDRom and sound card to take the sound from CD.

CD audio

What windows version are you using?

Windows XP or W2K uses digital audio extraction which means that you do not need the audio cable between the CDROM drive and the sound card. With Windows 9x you still need an audio cable.

The latest version of xmms is digital audio extraction capable. Personally, I haven't tried it yet.

To check to see if you have an audio cable you will need to open the case and physically look inside. It is a small cable of only 3 wires i.e. L channel,R channel and ground. There should be three cables connected to the CDROM drive, A white connector with 4 wires which is power. A flat ribbon cable which is the data and if installed an audio cable.
