Question Why is my laptop stopped working or hanged during browsing or a program running?

Hi, this is swapno_swapon. I'm new in the world of linux (Mint). I've just installed Linus OS(Mint 13) in my DELL Inspiron(N5010) laptop. But there is problem found by me. When i'm playing a program or browsing internet or anything else my laptop has stopped working that means hanged. No keyboard works,no mouse works. In this case after shutting down to press the power button the pc is running again. But after sometime during running pc, again that problem has found. I knew that there are no problem in linux OS about this type of problem. But my pc is being that... I feel sorry. there is any solution???pls.

Yes there is always a solution. First of all you have to find out what is causing the hang. You have provided only the symptom, so the best I can do is guess what might be the cause.

I have seen this type of problem, if your system runs out of temp disk space, or swap space. To find out, open a terminal, and run the command 'df'. Copy the output, and paste it in this thread.

Another command to run is 'swapon -s'. This will show how much swap is used, and how much is free. Post the results. All commands without the quotes, just what is between them. Run the commands beofre things lock up. Do it several times as you open programs. If you run out of /temp or swap, things will get slow first, then appear to stop.

Remember, this is just my best guess, based on the symptoms you posted.

How much ram on the system? How big did you make swap?

Welcome to Linux Questions!
You can also get hangs on laptops if the CPU cooling vents become clogged with dust/hair/other crud. The CPU overheats and it hangs.
Does it usually hang after a certain time has elapsed since power up?
It's probably not that but worth a quick check anyway.

Play Bonny!

Hi Soadyheid, yes your thinking is slightly right. My laptop has a slight problem in the coolling fan. It is heated more ....Recently i've cleaned the internal dust. As a result at present no heat is generated. But after a few days i think it'll again do that. Thanks for your response.

You appear to have enough tmp file space. With 2 gig of ram, there should not be problems, unless you are running a lot of programs at once.

swapon. Did you run that as root or a regular user? That file is usually located in /sbin, so for it to show you something as a regular user, the command would be '/sbin/swapon -r' That will show how much swap you have, and how much is used. Here us what the output should look like.

Quote:
/sbin/swapon -s
Filename Type Size Used Priority
/dev/sda5 partition 7996 0 -1
You should get one line for each swap partition, or swap file. If you still get nothing, that would lead me to believe you did not create a swap partition, or a swap file.

Also when you cut and paste output, please use the appropriate tags, like quote. That preserves the formatting and makes it easier to read.
