why don't I have kernel sources??

With the two Linux distros I have kept for any length of time, Mandrake and Xandros, I don't seem to have the "kernel sources"; I do not know why. I always have RPMs instead. I do not entirely understand the difference, but not having kernel sources seems to be a problem, because without them, Linux won't install the ACPI patches or Ndiswrapper for me. I get error messages every time, indicating that it can't find the kernel sources. So how do I get kernel sources instead of (or in addition to) RPMs?

With Mandriva, open a terminal, su to root and type

urpmi kernel-source

It should then ask for one of the setup CD's and will install the source from it.
I'm really not sure about Xandros as I've only ever used it once (and wasn't too impressed).

The kernel source is not the kernel, the source is only required if you want to build new modules for the kernel or rebuild the kernel itself.

re: kernel sources

Thanks, that's exactly what I needed to know. Well, I already agree that Xandros is not perfect: its selection of applications does not appear to be the best--Mandrake has more text editors and better media players, and Xandros doesn't come with Wine installed (neither does Mandrake). But I like it well enough that I'll keep it. Probably. By the way, thanks for the affirmation of God. Jesus loves you, too.
