Why doesn't USB DVD show on desktop?
I plugged in my Sony i.link/USB DVD+/-RW ,+/-r portable drive, but it did not show up on the desktop.
In /dev , there is:
and Link Target: /dev/hdc
Since the only other CD device on this computer is a CD-ROM, then this must be it, no?
How to get it to show an icon on the desktop? TIA
(Using Ubuntu 6.06)
Ooops! Turns out that what I thought was a CD-ROM is a CD-RW, so the USB DVD writer is not showing up anywhere that I can find.
I have googled and read extensively, but cannot find anything on USB-DVD's directly in point or anything on USB in general that has assisted me to locate it, much less get it to show on the desktop.
Any assistance kindly appreciated. Thanks.

I would welcome any opinion regarding the lack of response. If it is simply a matter of no one being able to assist, perhaps someone could suggest a forum better suited?
Alternatively, have I posted badly or otherwise posted in such a fashion as to discourage responses? If this is the case, I certainly would like to better understand how to do this in a way that is more productive and would welcome any suggestions.
