Why doesn't Red Hat Linux 4 ES see my hardware RAID 1 configuration?

Hello,

I've been trying to install Red Hat Enterprise ES v4 on an IBM xseries 346 8840-55u server using hardware RAID 1. RAID controller is AIC-7902 Ultra 320.

My problem is that the server doesn't see the hardware RAID. Is shows up with two drives instead of one. I've tried different controllers, but still NO luck.

Is anyone familiar with this type of setup? Is it possible on this machine? Sorry, very new to linux.

Hey There,

It sounds as if you may have to upgrade the bios/firmware on the actual box. If the RAID is managed by the hardware, it should present itself as a single disk to any operating system that you install.

Egg,

My thinking was the same with the hardware RAID. My problem is that it doesn't work. I've tried different bios updates from IBM. I'm looking for any help with anyone who has come across this problem.

Hmm...

If possible can you post your /etc/raidtab, if you use that to store your raid config? Also, how are you addressing the disk (I mean, are you mounting the /dev/sd* or /dev/hd* disks or are you seeing two logical disks, like /dev/md0 and /dev/md1 <-- All these examples are just fillers since I'm not sure what your setup is

Also, do you have the RHEL driver, listed here, installed?

Finger's crossed... Just make sure you can fail back, even though the driver is from the manufacturer!

Mike / Egg,

I was told that the controller can only provide software type of RAID because it is a HOSTRAID controller. Is this true? Do you know of any other controller that I could look into?
