Welcome to LQ

Long story short microsoft has a patent on codec.

You will need to install the needed codec yourself. Post what distro you are using or do a search on installing codec on this site or www.google.com/linux

in some distros CODECs are installed, but some of them not installed.
in Debian,SuSE9.2,Parsix,Knoppix and stc ... codecs are installed.
if you use a debian base Distro in multimedia-repositories you can find w32codec and many players and etc !

in other distros you must install it yourself.

good luck.
