Why does Moving cursor to left of screen change desktop?

I am using Mandriva 2007 ONE. I recently had problems ( not yet sorted completely) resizing certain windows. Now I find I have developed another problem. When I move the cursor to the left side of the screen, it opens desktop 4. I suspect that it runs through 1,2,3, and then 4 but it just looks like it flickers straight to 4. I am not using 3D as far as I can tell. I need a simple explanation please.

In Configure your desktop (kcontrol), go to Desktop--> Window Behaviour--> Advanced and check that Active Desktop Borders is disabled.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! You have saved this 62 year old from madness! But only for a short while I suspect. There is so much to know about this system, but I do not know how much of it I really need to know. Thank you very much.

Glad to have helped What do you want to know about? Perhaps I can point you to some useful resources that will help explain or show you what to do.

Unhappy

The things I need to know are how do I get Distros which can 'see' my internet router, to connect. Mandy 2007, 2008, and 2009 work, as does Foresight, Pardus,Parsix and Puppy. Nothing based on Ubuntu works. I also would like to upgrade to Openoffice 3.0 in Mandy 2007. and also install The latest version of wine, that should give me enough to muddle through with for the next six months. Thanks again for your help and your offer.

It's strange that you are having connection problems with *buntu distros. If you list your router model (with as much additional info as possible), perhaps the problem could be pinpointed.

As for adding Open Office 3 and the latest Wine. Have you checked in the package manager for their availability. I'm not sure if they have been moved to Main or if they are still in Backports or Contribs. If you don't find it in the list, check that you also have the latter two repositories added to your sources list.

This is really where it all began... I tried updating the media so that I might be able to do as you suggest. The box that came up, looks exactly the same as the one I get with mandy 2008 (I prefer to use 2007), but without the buttons at the bottom to ok or cancel my choice. It was trying to fix that, that caused the other problem. The wireless problem I think is to do with the TKIP encryption which is used. Changing that is not an option, because it is my lodgers connection/router, and my wife does not allow wires!... I am boss at all other times though!

*Cough* *Cough*.. say no more

When you say 'update' your media, I'm not sure if you mean update your existing repository list or add the required repositories. Things like updates or installing I prefer to do from commandline (I like to see what's going on) so if you don't mind I'll post the commandline options here:

Switch to root using the su command.

To update your repositories do: urpmi.update -a

To do a test install of Open Office & Wine do: urpmi --test openoffice.org wine go through the motions. At the end you will be advised if installation is possible.

If you want to add repositories, it would be easier to use one of the links in my signature.

Good Luck.

Thanks very much for all your help. I seem to have the latest WINE, but I still have not yet figured out how to install Openoffice 3.0 although there is an item listed as Openoffice.org 3.0-Mandriva-menus-3.0-9376.noarch. I also downloaded a version to my desktop but although I can unpack it, I do not know how to install it! As I mentioned before this could take me six months. There is so little that I understand. None of the books I bought cover what I want to know, and I do not know what I need to know. I have found another misbehaving window too! Thanks again for your help and your patience.

Before you do the install, you need to check you meet the requirements for install. At the commandline do:
Code:
uname -r
if the version that comes back is greater than or equal to: 2.4.xx.xx that's one requirement fulfilled.

Now do:
Code:
rpm -q glibc
again if the response is greater than or equal to: glibc2 version 2.3.2 (eg mine looks like this glibc-2.8-1.20080520.5.2mnb2) that's the final requirement fulfilled.

To install here are the instructions:
Quote:
su to root, if necessary, and navigate to OpenOffice.org installation directory, the OOO3... source directory.

Since the default packaging of OpenOffice.org for Linux is RPM, you will likely need to be root to run the rpm command.
cd into the RPMS subdirectory of the source directory.

You should see a lot of rpms here and one sub-directory called "desktop-integration".
Install this new version by typing rpm -Uvih *rpm.
Let's just make some of these steps simpler.

Wherever you unpacked the files to, go into that folder from the desktop.

Find the RPMS directory and enter it (again from the desktop).

Now press F4 this should open a terminal in the current directory.

Now type: su, enter your root password.

Now you can install by typing:
Code:
rpm -Uvih *rpm
If you haven't resolved your misbehaving window issue, post details of the problem I'll see if I can help.

Thank you again. I have two different versions that I downloaded : OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358 and OOO300_m15_native_packed-1_en-US.9379 which one should I use please?
The other problem... I occasionally get half the screen black when I boot up. Re-booting cures it. I can serf the net and the screen is fine, it is just half the desktop and associated icons that are missing. That may or may not relate to the problem. On occasion I have had windows too wide or too long. Too wide just involved moving it to the other side, but when they are too long I cannot drag it any further than the top of the screen. I thought that if I resized it, it would allow me to get to the buttons at the bottom, but I was mistaken. The buttons were not visible. I checked by looking at the same window in 2008. This is how I get there... Open software manager... Click options... Click on Update... The resulting window is now small enough to fit the screen but the buttons are invisible. There was another window, but I forget where for the moment.

OOO300_m15_native_packed-1_en-US.9379 <-- This one seems to be the most recent release.

With regard to your desktop problems, are you using desktop effects (CompizFusion)? I take it these window and button problems are in 2007?

It might be worth checking your graphics settings in the Configure Your Computer (Mandriva Control Centre)--> Hardware.

First thing, check, Configure 3D desktop settings see if Metisse or Compiz is on and disable them and check if the problem still persists.

If it does, go back into the Mandriva Control Centre--> Hardware and check your graphics card is correctly detected under Set up the graphical server.

If you could take a screenshot of the problem with ksnapshot and upload it to this thread, that would be of great help.

Still trying... Here is the half screen. I think you may be right about the graphics card settings. It lists it as a slightly different model.

How's the OOO3 install coming along?

Is your card an Nvidia or ATI?

Whichever one it is can you start a konsole (terminal session) and type:
Code:
/usr/bin/lspci > lspci_output
This will create a text file in your /home/username folder called lspci_output.

Open up this text file (examine it to make sure there is no personal info in there which there shouldn't be) then, copy and paste the info to this thread.

Thanks for your time, help and patience, but I don't think I have managed OOO3 yet. I am hoping it will open a certain file when it does just to confirm that I have done it. Below is the information you requested plus a picture of one of the offending windows. There are so many items that appear to be changeable , and although I can understand the words, they mean little or nothing in the context. ie. What is focus stealing prevention?... No I haven't tried it! Or Block Global Shortcuts? I posted this then I saw my nVidia 7300 GS at the bottom of the list!
