why do i have to have usb plugged in during linux boot for it to work

the wireless network usb device isn't configured unless its plugged in during bootup? help; i need it to work without rebooting.

farslayer 06-08-2009 02:11 PM

so what Linux Distro are you running ?

What wireless dongle ? (output of lsusb please)

lxquestions000019 06-08-2009 02:19 PM

its pendrivelinux v1, a remix of debian.

lsusb is showing a belkins plugged in and the usb hard drive.

my network card is the belkins. at least i know its recognizing it.

Hi,

'udev' should handle the device when it is plugged into the port. If not then rules are not setup properly for the device.

farslayer 06-08-2009 02:33 PM

a belkin what.. ? is there a model number ? usually lsusb lists more than just a manufacturer name.

lsusb -vv to get more detail

listen i need the device to work. if i reboot with it plugged in it will work, except i don't have the livecd i gave it back after i loaded into ram. now im stuck and i dont want to spend another 40 minutes although i probaly should since it will be quicker than trying to get tech support from these forums.

just a belkins. how does this have anyhting to do with my problem? in windows this is a simple install usb device. do you have any ideas? have u ever used a livecd? did you know that 99% of them won't load a device unless its plugged in during boot-up? puppy linux has the option after boot-up of loading usb device; it even says something along the lines of "linux is the fucking down-syndrom baby of retards and this one is good because i can give you the option to load a device after boot-up even though the modules for it werent loaded during boot-up"

Tinkster 06-08-2009 03:12 PM

Chances are that your current distro does something silly, like
bringing up network interfaces before udev is finished.

Try (after having plugged the USB network adapter in *after*
boot) running
/etc/init.d/network restart

Cheers,
Tink

P.S.: If you want help spare us the attitude. It's impossible
to help you w/o knowledge of what your set-up is. I also don't
know how many people would be running pendrive linux (I've
never even heard of it before today) with a network adapter
whose make and model they don't know ...

Code:

"Doctor, I'm sick!"
"What are your symptoms?"
"Spare me the questions, just fix me!"

It doesn't work like that.

without knowing the exact device we can't check if the module for it is loading.. Belkin makes lots of cards, and they don't all use the same wireless chip, which means they use different drivers.

Not sure why you came to ask for help if you are just going to argue with people that are trying to assist you, and be a smart-ass while spewing derogatory comments.

Best of luck. hopefully Tinksters solution works, because I won't be wasting my time with you any more.

With that attitude then help yourself.

I would say the OP needs to join a few other forums first and then come back and try again:

Not the four letter word I was thinking of, but yeah, help yourself
