why do i have to have usb plugged in during linux boot for it to work

the wireless network usb device isn't configured unless its plugged in during bootup? help; i need it to work without rebooting.

so what Linux Distro are you running ?

What wireless dongle ? (output of lsusb please)

its pendrivelinux v1, a remix of debian.

lsusb is showing a belkins plugged in and the usb hard drive.

my network card is the belkins. at least i know its recognizing it.

'udev' should handle the device when it is plugged into the port. If not then rules are not setup properly for the device.

a belkin what.. ? is there a model number ? usually lsusb lists more than just a manufacturer name.

lsusb -vv to get more detail

listen i need the device to work. if i reboot with it plugged in it will work, except i don't have the livecd i gave it back after i loaded into ram. now im stuck and i dont want to spend another 40 minutes although i probaly should since it will be quicker than trying to get tech support from these forums.

just a belkins. how does this have anyhting to do with my problem? in windows this is a simple install usb device. do you have any ideas? have u ever used a livecd? did you know that 99% of them won't load a device unless its plugged in during boot-up? puppy linux has the option after boot-up of loading usb device; it even says something along the lines of "linux is the fucking down-syndrom baby of retards and this one is good because i can give you the option to load a device after boot-up even though the modules for it werent loaded during boot-up"

Chances are that your current distro does something silly, like
bringing up network interfaces before udev is finished.

Try (after having plugged the USB network adapter in *after*
boot) running
/etc/init.d/network restart

P.S.: If you want help spare us the attitude. It's impossible
to help you w/o knowledge of what your set-up is. I also don't
know how many people would be running pendrive linux (I've
never even heard of it before today) with a network adapter
whose make and model they don't know ...
