Why do file names keep getting changed to dos 8.3 format on my usb drive?
Why is it that whenever I try to put files onto my usb drive the file names get truncated into dos 8.3 format? It is formatted as vfat but most of the time I don't intend to use the files in windows. I would rather just have to change the file names manually if needed. Besides, winxp doesn't really care. I have the same problem with fat formatted floppies and my fat formatted hd partition. How can I stop this?
Oh, BTW, I'm using slackware 10.1
You can't stop it - that's just the way that fat (not to be mistaken for fat32) does it.
Floppies use fat16 and by the looks of it that's how your usb key does it too.
