How does one play CD's? I sort of expected my CD's to play when I put then in the CD Rom - much like Windows does, but this doesn't happen. The sound card works and the CD Rom works (I installed RH9 from this drive). Do you have to copy/move the songs onto an 'ogg vorbis' system and play from there and if so, what are the steps? ... Any suggestions appreciated aside from RTFP which I have done.

You need to play them with a media player - this is what windows does automatically when you insert a CD.

ok.. well, it may not like it as when redhat9 was released (and 8 in fact) they have no mpeg support, i know this shouldnt effect anything (As cd isnt mpeg), but i found when in installed the XMMS mpeg update CDs played fine.

also I have found that in windows it will still play if you dont have the audio cable pluged into your cdrom...where in linux sometimes it will play and sometimes it wont, so check and make sure you have the audio cable pluged into your CDrom

When you say the sound card works I assume you can play mp3 or whatever and hear them?

Do you have an audio cable from your cd player to your soundcard?

Windows doesn't need it as it does some sort of digital extraction reading the data from the cd directly and converting to audio , xmms has an option in it's set up as far as I can remember that sounds similar "esd extract digital" but never got it to work.

Easy way, if your sure soundcard is working buy a £3 cable from you local friendly electronics store and download xine, (easier to set up than MPlayer ) there's a multitude of cd players out there) play cd, and dance away.

Just as an opion sound seems alot better through cd using alsa drivers on Linux than it does on Windows (directx I presume) maybe just a prejudiced ear here though.

Looking_Lost... he wont be able to play mp3s until he download the mpeg patch for whatever media player he is using. when he says the soundcard worsk, there should be a sound on the first bootup.. was there?

No sound on boot up, but when I test the sound card, I get the musical rendition.

I have XMMS and have tried to play thru that also to no avail.

Have checked mixer settings and they are mid-range and higher.

I do have a cable attached from the CD-Rom to the sound card (which BTW has 3 male plug ins - I've tried all of them, and still get 'no CD play').

In some fashion, I managed to put songs on a file and when I touch those with the mouse, they begin to play. Go figure! Not sure how to replicte this all the time.

So sound works, what happens when you try and play a cd with the cd-player that comes with red hat? (I'm working on rusty red hat memory now so current hat users may be more help)

As a side note it has been rumoured that the kernel has been programmed to inspect cd's and reject certain one's i.e Justin Timberlake, Barry Manilow and the entire Pop Idol catologue (sorry, couldn't resist )

like unclean said once the mpg update is applied cds should play fine...that was my experence aswell, atleast back when I was using RedHat
