WHY cant i get video acceleration
 

i posted this problem a while back and got plenty of responses but now im pissed to the point of formatting and screwing linux

why on gods green earth wont linux enable hardware acceleration on the ati 9700 pro i mean gimmie a friggin break hardware acceleration is the same damn thing for all the cards if it does it for one it must do it for the other....

please can someone gimmie the instructions to enable hardware video please!

i cant even run simple things like one of those 3d screen savers or that bz tank game

ati has drivers but they dont do shit you still ahve to mess with xfree and then again it still dont work

well its the same with everything else (even in windows :p) ... you need to download the drivers and install them ...

i just for the life of me,, cant understand why it cant have hardware acceleration out of the box,, i mean honestly

well according to what i was told here and thru the ati drivers,,,, it should be working but like so many others here it just wont work,, linux,, red hat suse mandrake all refuse to turn on AGP it still runs in PCI mode.

It could be more of a kernal problem. Linus needs to support AGP. He may not play games but why limit what Linux can do? I have hopes for 2.6 once I can install it.

sure the kernel,,, which from all sources it SHOULD work but it dont,, SUSE is sooo user friendly,, auto installing drivers and stuff for you,, you dont even have to interact with it hardly,, it even tells you what is needed from the source files when you update,,, i dont see why suse dont turn agp on.

im just frustrated fellas,, not to mention i just updated and it downlaoded a kernel update and linux just STOPPED then jerked and STOPPEd and jerked and i had to do a hot reboot,, so as far as i know linux might be screwed... ggrrr more frustrations.

linux by itself almost seems like it needs AGP turned on simply because of the laggy feel of it. but maybe its just me.

that's not a fair thing to say!! Linus only wrote the kernel, if you want to harp about something, it's the people who wrote the X-server program or the ones who wrote KDE. this is not Linus' doing, really. You should have bought a video card from a company who supports open source.......I have never had a prob getting my nVida card to work with the Drivers they supply.........

ati supports it just fine they have drivers for all their cards.

one of the things was to install the 9700 pro as a firgl card but which one,, i chose one,, a month ago and it fried KDE i was left with only the text interface i had to reload linux

I completely understand your eloquent argument about the complexity of the ATI video cards. I have an ATI Radeon 9600se that I remember paying top-dollar for at the store, and when I found out it didn't even come with Linux drivers, and I had to download them from the website, that was frustrating. But when the darn thing wouldn't even install under Winders XP I got downright mad! What, exactly DO the XP drivers fit, if not XP? It would not install the drivers at all, instead opting to use a default driver. The company doesn't even offer video drivers for this card under Winders 98.

The install manual for Linux is 24 pages of gobbledy-gook. 24 pages!!!! It's a stupid video driver!!! How hard can it be? I agree with you on your temptation to format and go back to being sheared every few years by the Organization in Redmond. It's tempting.

wouldnt install for XP your kidding right,,, go to aticom click downlaod drivers,, click the apporpriate OS and card you have,, download the driver,, run the exe let it install your card, then reboot. all should be just fine..
if not well you r gunna need to have the latest directX installed which would be dx9b also you may try doing this in safe mode, which sometimes works better as your installing the drivers ona standard vga environment. which again has in the past worked the best.

if they still wont install you really need to contact ATI or the people you bought it from. a card that wont install no matter what is only a few things, windows is bad,, the bios isnt set properly,, you dont have the right version of DX installed or,, the card itself is bad,, not allowing the hardware to accept the driver and vise versa.

see i can deal with windows hickups those are easy.

my whole gripe with hardware acceleration in linux is , how long as linux been out, how long has ati been giving us linux drivers, ok now,, how long has the ati 9700 pro been out.
combine all that and then download the latest linux,, regualr OR beta and what do you get,, you get linux without hardware support for your video card,,, you can install the drivers but a video card running in pci mode is only running in software mode. which,, is worthless. even the Linux GUI (KDE GNome is laggy because of the lack of any hardware accelerated graphics, which btw, the GUI needs, it needs hardware support for the skin and behavior of kde and gnome.

in a perfect world, this is how it is .. it may have been that simple for you, but even some windows users don't have it that easy .... and they also do run into troubles ...

Maybe I'll take up fly fishing instead. I'm getting old trying to configure Linux. How, exactly are we supposed to espouse to others the quality of an operating system that has 14 GUIs, 7 text editors, 4 browsers, 3 shells and so much trouble with video drivers. Again, 24 page manual of gobbledy-gook just to install it? No reasonable person would bother with that.

Fortunately, I'm not reasonable.
