why can't I start rsyslogd using the service command?

I'm using CentOS and some version of rsyslogd. I can't start it doing "service rsyslod start" - it says it is starting but ps yields nothing. I CAN start it doing /etc/init.d/rsyslogd.

Where should I look. And what is a good way to monitor processes to see if they die (so that they can be restarted. rsyslogd has crapped out on this machine a few times)...

I've never experienced any difference between the two mechanisms like you're finding. is there anything in, say, /var/log/messages?
