Are you able to ping the servers (testing for name resolution)?

nikm 08-19-2005 04:51 AM

gmail.com uses HTTPS protocol. May be your browser doesnt support HTTPS. Or you might have to add proxy server for HTTPS protocol too.

I have the same problem, I installed Mozilla Firefox and i can reach the Internet when I use Debian as operating system (I am using it now) but I can not open my gmail account.
I have dual boot on my computer and when I turn to Windows I can read gmail.
I have a proxy server, and I use it for both OS, Debian and Windows.......

It is very strange for me and I can not see any solution.

I use firefox both in windows2000 & fedora3,in windows it's works well using HTTP protocol, but cannot work in linux.

Thunderbird can only work with socks5 in windows.

In linux, my other mailboxes can use thunderbird, except GMAIL:(

I can ping the severs

I foun solution for my case....
in mozilla firefox go edit-preferences-connection settings-and in field of SSL proxy enter IP address of your proxy server and port it use.

It works on my computer

You sure about that? I can check mail on http://mail.google.com/mail/ and it's not a secure connection.

Clicking on the above links takes one to https://www.google.com/accounts/Serv...Dhtml%26zy%3Dl

I have no trouble using Gmail with Firefox. Of course I do not use a proxy other than Privoxy on occassion.

Why are you using a Sock5 proxy? Are you using the Tor network?

I have no problem checking my Gmail account using Kmail but have never been able to use it to send mail. To send mail I use my Yahoo account.

I have tried both ports 465 and 587, and even made sure Guarddog allowed those ports so go figure. Thunderbird is wacko on my system it won't even allow me to setup an email account, every time I enter the pop mail address it says invalid host name. :)

Webmail is easier and faster anyway.

It's HTTPS to login, but it reverts to plain old HTTP once you're logged in. Now I see where I went wrong.

For those interested, It's https until you logon, unless you log on at https://gmail.google.com . Then it stays https.

Now ,I can use gmail both to receive and send mails.Didn't do anything, only rewrited the IP and port number of the socks5 proxy.

I think it's enough to use webmail,so I give up thunderbird :)

Thank you all~ :)
