Why can't I get my wireless working? I have a compaq CQ60-215DX, Ubuntu 8.10

I have a Dual boot with Ubuntu 8.10 and Vista on my Compaq. The wireless works on the Visa operating system but i can't get it to work on ubuntu. I was reviewing the thread title: Need wireless driver for cq60-215dx, and tried some of the suggestions on it. When I go into terminal and input "lspci" my system doesn't list the Broadcom Corporation BCM PCI, it has the Atheros AR242X wireless PCI express adapter. Where do I find drivers for it, and how do I install them?

You need madwifi or ndiswrapper.

Swerdna does a good job of explaining things.

He does a pretty good job explaining things, but I had already installed ndiswrapper and it still isn't working. thank you for your post.

I have tried to install madwifi for this is what most are saying will correct my problem. Now i am having problems downloading madwifi. I keep getting the 404 error. Here is one of the many links I have tried; http://snapshots.madwifi-project.org...0081105.tar.gz

Is this still available our is it my bad karma?

I couldn't get it from madwifi.com, or any of the mirrors, either.

A google search led me to a sourceforge page the led to
THIS link; and I was able to download madwifi.

Make sure your hardware is supported by madwifi.

Also check if your hardware is supported by ndiswrapper; if so, a closer look at some different howto's might lead to the answer.

I am running ndiswrapper on a Dell laptop with the Dell wireless card - it works fine, but as I recall I had a bad time getting the install stuff streight. It can be tricky and close attention must be paid to the instructions.

With Debian I just apt-get install madwifi, apt-get install module-assistant, then just run module-assistant and check the madwifi module and let it build the module and install it. I Don't know if ubuntu does things "the Debian Way"but it should work. ( you might have to enable additional repositories for apt )

I got my wireless some-what working. I was able to download madwifi after a lot of trouble. The site above from Garyg007 was a help, but I ended up downloading a different version. Here is a link to the site I used. https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/66991

I am still having a few problems though. I can see all the wireless networks available in my neighborhood, or at least around my house including mine. I clicked on mine, and installed my wep key and I was able to get on once. Now when I do so, it won't get on the network. It tries to load but after a few moments the security box comes back up asking for the wep key again. It keeps doing so without getting on the wireless.

The other thing it is doing is it won't load in the BIOS and I have to manually load it when I retart my computer. I tried the command line;

sudo modprobe ath_pci

and I get;

bash: /etc/modules: Permission denied
jim@jim-laptop:~/Downloads/madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r4031-20090529$

What should I try next?
