Why bother?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Out of interest I downloaded Ubuntu onto a spare PC yesterday - in itself no particular problem.

However, unable to connect to internet.

Found this forum - seems a common problem.

Further looking round the forum suggests that Ubuntu causes more problems than it solves.

Tried programs that come with it - all are slow and laborious.

I have more to do with my time than mess about with an O S that presumably
has been devised by people who would be better employed getting a life!

Again - why bother with something that, certainly in it's present form, is no match for XP?

I'm sure you might be able to find more connection help if you asked nicely. To some people around here, MS seems to be the anti-christ. :)

What type of internet connection are you trying to use? Modem config? Those things have much to do with how easily you will or won't connect to the internet. For me, I'm running Ubuntu8.10 and I didn't need to do anything but plug in the ethernet cord... instant access. However, I'm still having a problem with my wifi.

Why go through the trouble when Vista connects to wifi automatically? Personally, for more online security. Other reasons? I think it's pretty. I like having two desktops, I still have my Vista partition in case I want to use it instead. And for many others, I assume having the ability to enter your own commands is a perk!

From what I gather, working with Linux, you're not as dependent on software to make necessary modifications. You don't have to pay $175 for office etc & and you're not as vulnerable to malware. A lot of people boast that they don't use any type of anti-virus, so I'm sure it leaves you with more harddrive space as well, and less time spent scanning your computer in safe mode... every week... with 4 different programs.

Why do people bother? Because, for them, the cost/benefit analysis decided in favor of linux.

Did you look for a howto?
Did you go to a bookstore and look for a book on any linux distribution?
Linux+GNU+UserEnvironment is what you are using. There are kernels from 0.x to 2.8.x, hundreds of distributions, dozens or package management systems, multiple files systems, etc.
Why not make your own for what you need?
By your own standards you are lazy. Nobody, not even MS, should make an OS for you, you should be left with doing that.
Momma stopped wiping your ass a long time ago, don't expect anyone else to do it.
Oh and if you are an incapacitated user, this is a figurative and not literal statement.

You don't need to bother, just use XP if it fits your needs.

tteltrab;

Please don't hesitate to start another thread if there is a specific question we can help with. I assure you that there are many Ubuntu users here that have internet working.
