Why am I being asked a username and password when I'm still trying to install Ubuntu?

Just downloaded the Ubuntu 7.1, Saved it to my hard drive, burned my cd using Infra recorder.

Tried to install it on a new desktop computer with a single hard drive, no windows installed.

The computer boots from the CD with the Ubuntu screen where I choose "Start or install Ubuntu".

Loading screen appears and after which the first thing I see is the username request.

What to do?

I don't remember needing to enter a username and password upon booting, have you tried just hitting Enter without typing anything for the username?

If I remember correctly, the word 'guest' (withoug quotes) works as boot user name and password. I also vaguely remember a message somewhere on screen that gives that information, or a help command to use to get that information.

teddyt, yup tried that, it doesn't work.

bigrigdriver, will try your suggestion

additional info:

got my download from http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download. In that same page, there's a note for an option that is given to users who want the alternate desktop CD instead. However, the CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer. Could it be that what I downloaded did not include the Live CD as well? If so where do I get it.

Or is it possible that my earlier repartitioning the hard drive using a dos based Partition Magic have anything to do with it?

It's unfortunate you are having these difficulties. I just pulled out an Ubuntu 7.10 live CD and it booted directly into a graphical environment without requiring a login. I then restarted the X server and when it asked for a login I hit enter and it went back into the Gnome desktop.

I went to the link that you gave. The file you downloaded should be either

ubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso

for 32-bit (should run on almost any hardware), or

ubuntu-7.10-desktop-amd64.iso

for 64-bit.

One thing comes to mind now. On my laptop, for some unknown reason, when booting into Ubuntu 7.10 I also get a non-graphical login prompt. There is a problem with hardware - not sure what because it isn't a big deal so I never looked into it. I hit Ctl-Alt-Del when I get prompted for my login name and then it loads correctly.

{This reminds me that I should file a bug report with Ubuntu if it hasn't already been filed.}

Thanks teddyt, appreciate the concern.

I've got it figured out. After performing a check on the CD, it had an error.

Made another CD and it went well.

Thanks also for bigrigdirver for the suggestion.
