Why after entering my user login does nothing display as I type in the password?

Kind of a long story, but I'll keep it short. I have a poweredge server with I believe its GNU/Linux that is setup to boot in text mode. I turn the server on and it ends up at a login prompt. I enter the user login...it then goes to the next line and asks for a password and regardless of my keystroke all I see is a hesitation of the cursor. No entry. Please help.

Welcome to LQ

The password is not echoed in linux (for safety reasons), so just type the password and hit enter.

Kind regards
