Thumbs up Why a Process shows multiple process ids(pids) ?

Hi LQ,

I have a process running on Linux.

When i do ps -eaf | grep <myProcess>, it show muliple entries for

<myProcess> with different pids for each entry.

Kindly tell me what could be the reason for a process having multiple pids?

Thanks,

Assuming myProcess is the program (process) name, usually it'll be multiple copies; see fork(), exec() cmds. See Apache (httpd) as an example.
On older kernels you also saw each thread as a separate process.

Here's hoping this isn't a homework qn
