Why's My Ubuntu 8.04 hanging?

Dear Tux Lovers,
I'm a GREEN Newbieee, can anyone help explain why my newly installed Ubuntu 8.04 hangs. It usually hangs when I have many tabs open in Firefox, so I tried installing Opera and when I went to terminal to sudo it the situation becomes worse.

Thanks brothers.

PS,
Could anyone please describe how I can install DreamWeaver, Macromedia Flash, Adobe Audiotion, Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw and Frontpage. So also, kindly recommend any GNU/GPL HTML editing programme that has the ability to do what I usually do with DreamWeaver and Frontpage.

Hi, and welcome to LQ!

Web page makers and editors(wysiwyg, what you see is what you get) try Komposer, Quanta-plus. There are others, you'll find them under developement/web developement. Komposer is very much like dreamweaver.

How many firefox tabs do you have open to cause a freeze? Your video memory/swap may be a contributor.

As for the other programs, you may need a virtual machine, like virtualBox to setup windows and those programms.

Wine is another alternative, allows you to run M$windows programs.

Well, I hope it was some indication of where you need to look for information on your dilemma.

Open source software has come a long way in the past years, you should be able to find anything you require, Google is your friend.

nvu is a frontpage like app. I just googled frontpage linux

There's more, but have a look for your self because you know what you need. I'm sure you will find them all in OSS.

Ubuntoo is really popular right now, so there is bound to be an influx of software available to do the job.

If you really, really need to use adobe's products, then you may require an emulator or a virtual machine. As I mentioned above. But I am A Mandriva advocate/user/promoter, so I don't really know too much about the ubuntoo distro(.deb package manager)

First make sure you have the latest package database. (apt or synaptic, (synaptic is like the "smart" package manager that I prefer, but for deb, not rpm) Check this site if you need more...

http://monkeyblog.org/ubuntu/installing/

I hope you find it, also remember If the package is not available in deb then one may be available as source. (./configure make make install, etcetera.)

Cheers, Glenn

As for installing M$windows programs (adobe products) wine HQ http://www.winehq.org/

has a large following and many documents.

IMHO, you are best to source any programs from ubuntu if you can as installing from source can get a bit involved.

I mean it's easy to install it, but if it is not linked up properly, you may never get to ues the program. This is one of my pet peeves with Mandriva at the moment. But I'm sure I'll get over it, Read more, Talk Less, problem is I like to talk.

regards, Glenn

ps, we have not discussed the hanging problem you have...

It sounds to me like you don't have enough memory to run lots of tabs in Firefox. How much memory does your computer have?

I don't know what that means. Do you mean that you tried to invoke sudo to kill the Firefox program?

Frontpage is a problem because it has Microsoft proprietary tools. It is part of Microsoft's attempt to get web developers to use Microsoft's proprietary software on web pages, thereby creating the need for end users to use Microsoft software such as Internet Explorer instead of Firefox or Opera or whatever. For that reason Frontpage should not be used by anyone. IMHO of course. :)

GIMP and Inkscape might replace Adobe Illustrator. GIMP is raster graphics. Inkscape is vector graphics.

I don't know about Flash and Adobe sound stuff.
