Who handles the internal system mail on my box?
I was lookingt at all the bunch of packages I installed in my newbieness frenzzy. So now I wonder who handles the internal emails. As in, mail notification to root.
I found I got installed procmail, fetchmail, mailx, and exim4. I my memory doen't fail me, it was procmail by default at installation time? Can I remove the others safely without breaking sumting ? Or... how do I found out which is the one ? [/em Qucho looks arround for Neo] |
Check your running processes.. ;)
I would think it is procmail, if so you should be able to remove anything that isn't being used without any problems. |
I looked over the running processes. Exim4 was running.
So I got rid of 'fetchmail' since that one does not appear to be necesary since exim is working. Regarding 'procmail'. I left it alone since I dont really understand what this program does and the documentation seems obscure to my noobiness, but feels like it does some 'behind the sceen' work. And mailx description in apt-get says it is a important application and many programs use it even if I dont notice it. So I am leaving it too. I guess this is one of those things not meant to be mess with by a noob like me. But... some day... some day... I will see the light ! :P |
