Ok I am stlill as wet as a new born baby. So I am compleatly stumped when I can't login. I reinstalled my setup 3 times. Each time it asks for my user name and password I am extreamly carefull typing it in . I tried the same password for both user and administrator and different password for administrator at other times. These passwords are easy for me because I use these two all the time on windoze. I am using RH6.2. What do I need to do if I go back and it dosen't let me in.

A couple of questions first... Many apologies if these insult you.

1) The "administrator" account on most unix(s) is "root" not "administrator" as in Windows NT/2000/XP
2) User accounts have to be created once logged in, if you havent created your "user" account yet, you won't be able to log in as user.

Now, if these don't help hopefully this will.

If using LILO, you can add "single" the lilo prompt and it will start in single user mode and allow you to change the password again, or take it out all together for testing. LILO: linux single

To remove the password type, once booted into single user mode, :
passwd -d root
That should remove the passwd, press CTRL-D to continue booting and try this out.

Thanks I'll try that. When reinstalling the program the setup asks you for a user account and administrator account . I know about root. I haven't told everything. I had it up and running but it always gave me trouble with the passwords and login. I would have to type it in a couple of times before I got in . I got tired of that and reinstalled the program now it dosen't let me in at all !But hey you can't insult me I don't know any better :-> . I am thinking that perhaps I need a different keyboard. What will that do when I turn on the machine again ?

It shouldn't care one bit what keyboard you have. As long as it works :-)

That was the point I was trying to make.Perhaps the keyboard wasn't working properly. I knew the "Enter" key on the qwetry section stuck so I had to use only the enter on the number pad"Enter". However the keyboard wasn't the trouble. I was able to solve the problem. I found that in the graphic setup I didn't follow the last steps of entering the password properly and add it to the user's list. I was under the impression that that was for any additional users so I never entered my user name to that list Hence nobody was listed as a user. Thanks for all your help. I am still having trouble booting up the latest release of Linux 8.0 . Please refer to my note in "newbie" under "patchwork"
