A couple of questions first... Many apologies if these insult you.
1) The "administrator" account on most unix(s) is "root" not "administrator" as in Windows NT/2000/XP
2) User accounts have to be created once logged in, if you havent created your "user" account yet, you won't be able to log in as user.
Now, if these don't help hopefully this will.
If using LILO, you can add "single" the lilo prompt and it will start in single user mode and allow you to change the password again, or take it out all together for testing. LILO: linux single
To remove the password type, once booted into single user mode, :
passwd -d root
That should remove the passwd, press CTRL-D to continue booting and try this out.
