Hi everyone,

I am the :newbie: of the :newbie: s and I want to get (buy) an Linux OS.

Which OS and which version would you recommend ?

It will be installed on my DELL Latitude laptop C840 (brand new).

Thanks for your help.

please search the site for recommendations. most people haven't got the time or energy to recommend a dozen different distributions to a newbie every single day.

Then they won't..

I however _will_ recommend that you try either suse, mandrake or redhat. these are the easy ones.

I started on suse and I think that it's great.

Good Luck dude :) - your probably gonna need it ;) -

Oh! I think that most distributors have some kind of hardware compatabilty list. you could check relative lists for your laptop if you wanted too, but i'm sure you could get linux on it either way....

If its also on a brand spankin new laptop, I would definitely check out the HCL and maybe www.linux-laptop.net for info on what distros work best on that laptop.

I can't recommend SuSE as I have 8.0 Pro which can't connect to the Web. Can't figure out why. I did everything by the book. Also, this distro is like *BSD. What's that mean? It has ancient support for geForce video.

If you're looking for one that takes full, or almost full, advantage of your latest hardware, go for Mandrake or Redhat.

I've only used redhat and i think it is great. It didn't get me very long to find my way around. But i heared Suse is good too.
